My 3 favorite things from 2024:
1. This printer
The 3 best things I bought in 2024 starts with number 1: a purchase I made on January 1, 2024. It’s the monochrome laser wireless printer from Brother that I bought at Walmart on the way home from visiting Nora McInerny for New Year’s Eve and stupidly drove an electric car there not realizing there were not enough chargers in between LA and Phoenix, making a 5 hour trip a 12 hour trip, do not recommend. So while I was charging my car for the 9th time at the 9th Walmart, I walked in and bought a printer.
Not only has this printer still not needed a toner replacement after a full year (laser = no ink cartridges), it was so easy to set up. Many of you will ask me what the color printer version of this is, and I will say there really isn’t one. What makes this so good is the lack of ink. Color printers need ink.
I use this printer everyday. It makes returns so easy, not to mention taxes, forms, you name it. When my friends come over they say, “can I use your printer?” and I say “yes, but you should also buy one for your own place.”
Most of them have by now.
Dermstore is sponsoring today’s newsletter, and code GEETHANKS gets you 15% off some of your favorite brands including Sunday Riley, SkinMedica, Paula’s Choice, SuperGoop! and more. Plus, this value set is already a great deal — and using our code makes it better.
2. These plants
My second-best purchase of the year was actually nine separate purchases. When I moved into my apartment, it felt empty and overwhelming—I realized it just needed a bit of life. Lottie and I had gone from a family of five (two humans, two cats, and one dog) to just the two of us, and it became clear we needed living things around us to fill the space in a meaningful way. With no plans to add another human or another animal to the mix, it left us with one option: Plants.
Unfortunately, my track record with plants is pretty terrible. I don’t exactly have a green thumb—things just seem to die on my watch. I mean, I don’t even drink water regularly myself, so how am I supposed to remember to give it to the plants?
I ended up placing a large order at easyplant with the caveat that I would need about a year to determine whether I could actually keep these plants alive. Here’s what sold me: “Each easyplant has a hidden water reservoir that only needs to be filled when it empties, about once a month. With our technology, water is carried from the reservoir to the bottom layer of soil - directly to the root. The watering system regulates the amount of water your plant needs, ensuring that it always has the perfect amount of water to keep it happy and healthy.” I set a calendar alert on the 24th of each month (tomorrow!) to water all of my plants.
10 months later…look at my children!
3. These boots
The last thing I bought (or, actually, these were given to me by my parents) were these Ugg boots. They look kooky, but they are wonderful. So warm, so easy to walk in (I logged a mile in them the other day), and perfect for snow and slush. I would still treat the suede like you would any other Ugg, but the sole is super durable and can stand up to snow and salt and ice. (I am a size 10.5 in most shoes and I am a 10 in these.)
I really love them.
