If you’re new around here, I have found, without fail, a perfect Old Navy dress every single summer since summer 2018. And since 2022, I’ve shared them here. That year was the year of the Reformation dupe that traveled with me to Lake Como and beyond.

Then last year, it was the simple but effective black ribbed midi dress that could be worn for almost any occasion in any season; a true closet staple for me still to this day. Here I am wearing it with a sweater over it in a Berlin hotel in September 2023:

Unfortunately, neither of these dresses are part of Old Navy’s offerings this year, which means if you want to jump on the 2024 DOTY (Dress of the Year), we have learned, historically, that you have one season to do so. As one Geezer told me, “the floral dress was my ‘one that got away’ and I’ll never let that happen again.”

Here’s this year’s dress:

She’s a comfy rib-knit maxi with a neat fit-and-flare style, featuring a scoop neck and spaghetti straps. It's made mostly of cotton with a bit of spandex for some stretch. You can pick it up in several colors like jade, zinnia, black, blue, and off-white (pictured), and it's available in sizes from XS to 4X, including tall and petite options. Perfect for a casual day out or dressing up a bit, it falls just above the ankle.

Why we love it: Like the midi ribbed dress, the 2024 DOTY is a basic that will go with everything in your closet. Dress it up, dress it down! Layer it into fall and winter, wear it on its own in the summer. Endless possibilities.

The most FAQ about this dress so far has been about what bra we’re wearing with it. I’m gonna be honest with you: I am in a no-bra era as of late. I’ll throw Cakes nipple covers on if I feel like I must. I know that’s not for everyone, so my rec would be to go strapless (here’s my pick).
