Hi Geezers!

I meant to send a big email on January 8th (premium subs, you’ll get it this weekend!), but then the news of the fires and, well, you know. I often say that once there’s a crisis and I go into mutual aid mode, I am pretty much incapable of organization beyond Instagram stories. So if I go dark on Substack for a suspicious amount of time, go take a looksie over on IG and see if I am in the boxing ring with my ADD.

An absence of emails isn’t an absence of Geezers, though.

Together since January 8, the Gee Thanks! community on Instagram raised $60,000 in micro-donations for trusted mutual aid partners like This Is About Humanity We sent them $25,000 to directly help undocumented folks access resources, cash grants, and emergency relief. We also supported Global Empowerment Mission (below! below!), as well as donated $35,000 toward various vetted and verified GoFundMes focused on families who lost their homes in Altadena, a historically Black neighborhood that provided refuge and opportunity for Black families to build generational wealth during the Civil Rights movement.

Geezers were also responsible for sending high quantities of a handful of specific and requested items from an Amazon wishlist to the Global Empowerment Mission warehouses in Chico, CA and in my old neighborhood of Glassell Park in LA. Above is a video our partner Shelly from Pandemic of Love sent me from the GEM distribution center in Pasadena. It made me smile.

Here’s what Geezers sent (and it’s probably more, since this was from a few days ago):

Quick math on that: You sent 8,910 hand warmers, 3,480 sticks of deodorant, 33,300 body wipes, 2,544 tubes of toothpaste, and 12,432 toothbrushes. (!!!!!!!)

Also, you guys, Pandemic of Love and GEM are BIG mutual aid orgs. And they see Gee Thanks! as a partner. We are not an organization but we are reliably always showing up when help is needed. I need you to understand how much that matters, and how it can be applied in all of your communities, no matter where you live.

I don’t tell you this to pat ourselves on the back, but to remind you that big crises require everyone’s help, and everyone’s help can yield massive results. I feel luck to be in community with all of you.
