What I lost in LA (and what I found in NY)
OGs know exactly what I'm about to say.
Looking for a sleep mask that’s comfortable, adjustable, and fully blackout? I was too.
When I moved to LA in early February 2020 (talk about world’s worst timing), adjusting to the time change was a nightmare. I was always exhausted by 8pm, probably because I was wide awake and ready to go at 4am. I would literally get up at 4am and start working. In the dark! For hours!
When I moved back to New York I expected the same schedule, but to my surprise, I stay up much later here, and I sleep much later too. Did I just…never adjust to Pacific Time?
My doctor said it was possible. Our bodies constantly manifest stress, depression, change, and trauma in different ways! Fun! Uprooting my life just weeks before a global pandemic threw everything into chaos and definitely messed with my sleep. Fun!
But! Now that I sleep past sunrise, I needed a sleep mask that works. My bedroom is mostly windows, and the blinds aren't enough. I need something heavy-duty to keep me from waking up at 5:30am in the middle of summer.
I tried a bunch (including Nora McInerny fav, the NodPod), but here’s why I landed on the Manta.
5 reasons why the Manta Sleep Mask is a game-changer for the best rest possible:
100% Total Darkness: Blocks all light for deeper, more restorative sleep.
Adjustable and Comfortable: Fully adjustable eye cups for a perfect, pressure-free fit.
Soft and Breathable: Made from cooling, moisture-wicking fabric for all-night comfort.
Ideal for Any Sleep Position: Stays put whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper.
Perfect for Travel: Compact and portable, making it a must-have for quality sleep on the go.
Two things I am loving right now:
These beautiful cowboy boots from Chalo, a small woman and family-owned business that originates with the founder’s father in North India. I own the short style and I know they are going to be something I pull from my closet for decades to come. — right now you can get an exclusive 10% off your Chalo boots in our Flagship!
These fully hand-embroidered sweatshirts, tees and sweaters from Forsythia Stitches! Pick your phrase and your colors and get something that’s all yours. This small business is Geezer-owned and operated, and we love them. — right now you can get 15% off your order with code GEETHANKS15 at checkout (exp. 6/30/2024)

I grew up on the east coast outside of DC and now live in Portland, Oregon. I don’t think it was not adjusting to the time zone as much as just the east vs. west coast lifestyles go with the timezones. I go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier on the west coast. In college our parties started earlier and ended earlier. Live tv events end earlier so we can go to sleep earlier! It just makes sense.
