There is a category of products I think of as “the thing someone would never buy for themselves but becomes obsessed with once they have it,” and I think we often find ourselves in that world with our recommendations, both the ones you give and the ones I give. Gee Thanks! lives in that world. But the world is mostly for the girls.
We have the stuff-for-women market covered, but we neverrrrr really get into the man of it all. Recently, though, I was reminded of a menswear recommendation from 2023 that went super viral around here. Since it’s been three years, I thought it was worth bringing back because I’m guessing quite a few of you weren’t around for this one the first time. I still stand by it, and so do you, because when I mentioned it on Instagram, my DMs were filled with messages like this:
If you’ve never heard of True Classic, the entire brand is built around a surprisingly simple idea: most men’s t-shirts are terrible.
Not because they’re falling apart (though some of them absolutely are), but because so many men seem to acquire their wardrobes by accident. Free 5K shirts. College shirts from 2007. Brewery shirts. Conference swag. That random shirt from a bachelor party. The promotional tee they got somewhere and never stopped wearing. Somehow these become the backbone of an adult man’s wardrobe.
True Classic looked at this phenomenon and said: what if…not those shirts? Their minds! Wow.
True Classic shirts are designed to accentuate the parts most people want to highlight, like the shoulders, chest, and arms, while maintaining a comfortable, easy fit throughout the rest of the body. They make men look a little more put-together, a little more intentional, and a little more like they actually chose what they put on that morning. When I found them in 2023, I had a bunch of different friends try them (guy friends and girlfriends via their husbands and boyfriends) and the tees got 10s across the board from all participants. Their clothes also meet the reality that men, like all humans, come in different shapes and sizes. I know, it’s novel! It’s not just tees — you can build an entire wardrobe off of their pieces, and a lot of men I know actually have (hell yeah).
This is also one of those gifts that, when you gift it, gets used immediately. Hello Father’s Day! Not tucked into a closet for a special occasion! It’s just a tee-shirt. It’s not intimidating. Like, don’t worry, no one is trying to turn your man into a fashion guy. No one is asking him to learn about trends or silhouettes or seasonal colors. True Classic is simply offering a better version of the shirt he already wears every single day. Without the logo of a BANK ON THE BACK!!!!!!!!
My biggest piece of advice: don’t buy one shirt on its own. The bundles are where the value is, and honestly, I’d start with at least a 6-pack. By the time you get into the bigger bundles, you’re basically giving him a wardrobe refresh for less than the cost of a single fancy button-down.
And before you panic about missing a deal, this brand is almost always running some kind of sale. Right now there’s some good flash sales that get each shirt to about $12 each. The question isn’t whether to buy. It’s how many shirts it’ll take to finally retire the 2007 Turkey Trot tee. Next year that shirt will be considered vintage.
Think about it.
