A few weeks ago I broke glass in case of emergency and told the audience of Ali On The Run about my dream to run the New York City marathon before my 40th birthday. This went on my bucket list when I turned 28, and at 28, my 40th birthday felt a very very long ways away.
Now, at 37 and a half years old, I realized that 40 is around the corner, and the time has come to GET SERIOUS. This year feels too soon, which leaves 2026 and 2027. If I wait for 2027, that’s only going to give me a 3 week buffer between marathon and 40th birthday. So 2026 is it.
Now that I’ve told the world about my goal, I can’t back out now.
So I’ve been running! I ran a 5k on May 4, and it was SO hard but so rewarding, and I didn’t feel like I wanted to give up right after I finished, which is a marked improvement over the last time I ran a 5k (I gave up on running right after I finished).
Here’s what I’ve been wearing while running, and recommend! A few of these are Amazon links.
This Flip Belt (I sized down one to keep it as secure as possible)
I tried so many sports bras and this one was THE ONE (currently on sale!)
Even though I am an Oura head, I bought an Apple Watch JUST for this endeavor. I only wear it while running!
I got fitted for shoes and landed on a few different pairs, and I don’t mention it in this episode but I ended up gravitating most toward these Asics. I learned I was a 10 Wide and not a 10.5 regular, which is HUGE…I thought everyone’s feet just hurt all the time? I couldn’t find my size anywhere except Amazon, which is why I am linking there. But lots of stores do sell Asics.
These socks! I tried compression socks and they hurt my feet. These ones are great for right now.
This hat. It’s my favorite thing.
I learned I can’t listen to music while I run because I am too aware of how long a song is, and when it should be over, and how long I’ve been running for. So I’ve been listening to episodes of This American Life. If you have a favorite ep, or a narrative podcast that really does a good storytelling job, please leave it in the comments for me!
